Painting demonstration at school art display
I had fun tonight doing a painting demonstration for kids and their parents at a local school art display. It was wonderful to see all of the children’s artwork displayed in a range of mediums, including video and live music perfomances. I was invited to paint on canvas, so I started the underpainting of a small red rose on gold ground…really love answer kid’s questions about the progress and steps of a painting, and seeing their pleasure in watching art happen. Great evening.
Underpainting of rose, only the first 2 layers….
Books I’m reading during my trip to St Petersburg
For those of you who might not know, I’m off to St Petersburg this week on an art study trip, read more at my other blog post. I’m going to find a 30 hour flight really boring, especially if I can’t paint or write or do much really, so being the prolific workaholic that I am, I’ve decided that reading will amuse me, unless I find someone interested to talk to
So here are my selection of books I’m reading during my trip to St Petersburg:
The Heart Garden by Janine Burke, which is about Sidney Nolan’s muse and lover, Sunday Baillieu. It basically portrays her significant impact on Australian modernism…should be an interesting read, I’ll let you know how it goes.
The other book, is one which I have read a few times, but I am revisiting The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol. I adore Gogol’s writing, and it appeals to my sense of humour, similar to the way Voltaire’s works do. In particular,
The Nose and The Overcoat are my favourites, but I pretty much like them all. The last time I read his works was about 6 years ago, so it will be comforting to revisit with older eyes, and quite appropriate for my impending trip to St Petersburg. While Gogol went to St Petersburg in 1828 to seek his fortune in St Petersburg, I am seeking fortune of the artistic soul I suppose
Silk embroidery Roses on a handpainted background
I finished this little sampler piece of Silk ribbon Roses embroidered onto a hand painted background, which I’m using for a magazine article submission…I have no idea what I’m going to do with it! The size is 12 cm x 12 cm…maybe a small pillow insert?
I completed the background with a handpainted rose design first, then added leaves with ribbon stitch.
All of the ribbons are hand dyed silk (I buy these, as I do not have time to dye my own) and the rose centres are organza- I like the two texture effect. The roses are rolled roses, and then once in place, hand sewn petals are individually added to complete the roses. These colours are different for me to work in, but I love the merging greens to pinks and yellows and peach colours.

Ideas for orb spiders on porcelain
I found this beautiful image of orb spiders that I think will contribute towards my next porcelain piece on spiders. I have two project pieces in mind for porcelain at the moment, one is the spider one I was planning a little while back, and the other will be to use the design I ditched for Funny Valentine. Here’s the photo for the spider anyway….now to think
Love this and the dew drops pic from the last post….the web detail is particularly fascinating…maybe a vase might suit better?
Soul Mates and friendship quotes and poems
A few facebook friends today have been sharing some awesome quotes which resonated with me over the past few days, about friendship, soul mates, love…these really inspired some ideas
(¯`•.•´¯)¸.•´
.`•.¸¸.•´ ♥ Touch a woman’s mind and you get her interest…Touch her heart and you get her love…Touch her soul and you will get passion beyond your wildest dreams…And once you have touched all three, you have found your soul mate for eternity…♥
Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
- Marcel Proust
“La amistad es más difícil y más rara que el amor. Por eso, hay que salvarla como sea.”
” The friendship is more difficult and rarer than love. That’s why, it is necessary to save it as it is. “
Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
~William Butler Yeats
New painting “As petals fall” starting
My new painting “As Petals Fall,” this piece is inspired by some poetry I’ve been writing. I’ve been listening to Sneaky Sound System while painting this too, the videos for the songs are at the end of this post…totally inspired by the lyrics “Everytime I fall you take my hand…And you would volunteer to understand me”…Enjoy the progress to date. I’m using metallic gold light as the medium value throughout this painting.
This is the song for my muse for this painting “Big” by Sneaky Sound System.
Painting “Funny Valentine” by Ingrid Lee
It’s finally completed!!!! The painting ”Funny Valentine” is done….I’m really happy with this painting. I think the relationship and interaction between the male figure (left) and female (right) are clear, and details are fine. I did change my original intention of using the line design from the original post (I did apply it to this painting, but it looked crap, so I wiped it off). I’ll use this in either an ink or porcelain piece.
Close ups……
Almost finished!!!!!
Well my paints arrived yesterday, and I’ve been painting “Funny Valentine“ since!! Almost finished now. Here is where I’m at, the last parts that I need to focus on are largely the central figures and the bit in between.
I’ve included a couple of pics from the last few days to show the development of this painting. Today, I’m recording where I need to work on so I don’t forget!!!

Next layers of painting “Funny Valentine”
Next layers of painting “Funny Valentine”….I’ve run out of paint (more is coming next week) AND I’ve hit a wall with the mid section of the painting.
I know what I want behind the female figure (right side of canvas), and I know what I need to finish on the male figure (left side of canvas) for this layer of painting, but I don’t want to do any of those parts until I fix the mid section….got a bit of brain fog and what I want to say isn’t coming out- because I’m thinking too many layers ahead. So maybe it was fortunate that I ran out of paint, I’ll give Sting and Chris Botti a rest *lol* ;p.
Happy with part so far, I know where it’s going…..
This photo below is the correct lighting, and is a true reflection of the colours
Now I’ll start a ribbon embroidery piece and unlock my brain, get thinking about something else for a while, until my paints arrive, then I’ll attack it again.
Progress on “Funny Valentine” painting
Progress on “Funny Valentine“ painting from the other day….I’ve painted over a few initial ideas, but just getting the main concepts down. This “layer” is still not finished, the left figure and bottom of canvas still to go. Again, listening to the music throughout the entire painting time…and no, I do not get sick of listening to it, because I listen to the layers or movements of the music for my interpretation, rather than the song as an entity in itself, so I focus on different parts of the music, instruments, key changes, lyrics. Then I need some time to think, feel and paint the final stages.
